South Africa's National Cricket Team

 

The South Africa national cricket team, also known as the Proteas, is the national cricket team of South Africa. It is governed by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and has been a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 1991.

The team has a strong record in both Test and One Day International (ODI) cricket, having won several major international tournaments. They have been ranked as high as number one in the ICC Test rankings and have regularly been among the top teams in ODI cricket.

Some of the notable players to have represented the South Africa national cricket team include Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Shaun Pollock, Dale Steyn, and Kagiso Rabada.

For the 2023-24 time frame, CSA granted 20 players public agreements, from which selectors pick the center of the Test, At some point, and Twenty20 Global teams. Non-contracted players stay qualified for choice and can be moved up to a Cricket South Africa contract in the event that they gain normal determination.

The team has also had a significant impact on the sport, particularly during the era of apartheid in South Africa, when they were excluded from international cricket. Their return to international cricket in the early 1990s marked a significant moment in the country's history and helped to further promote racial integration and reconciliation.

The South African cricket team has participated in all major international cricket tournaments, including the ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, ICC World Twenty20, and the ICC Test Championship.

Their first major international tournament was the 1992 Cricket World Cup, where they finished in the semi-finals, before being knocked out by England. They reached the semi-finals again in the 1999 and 2007 World Cups, but were unable to progress any further.

In 2003, South Africa hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup along with Zimbabwe and Kenya. The Proteas made it to the Super Six stage of the tournament, but lost all their matches in that round, failing to qualify for the semi-finals.

South Africa has had a successful record in the ICC Champions Trophy, winning the tournament in 1998 and finishing as runners-up in 2002, 2004, and 2013. They have also performed well in the ICC World Twenty20, reaching the semi-finals in 2009 and 2014.

In Test cricket, South Africa has had a strong record at home, where they have one of the best win-loss ratios of any team. They have also had success overseas, winning Test series in Australia, England, and India. The team's greatest period of success in Test cricket came in the late 2000s and early 2010s, when they held the number one ranking for an extended period of time.

Some of the team's most memorable moments include the "438 game" against Australia in 2006, where they chased down a record total of 434 to win the match. They also won a historic Test series against Australia in 2008-09, their first series win in Australia since the end of apartheid.
