Permanent account number {PAN}
Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique 10-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department of India to individuals, companies, and entities. It serves as a universal identification key for all financial transactions and is mandatory for anyone who is required to file an income tax return, including foreign nationals who wish to invest in India.
The structure of a PAN is as follows: The first five characters are letters, followed by four digits and a final letter. The first three characters represent a sequence of alphabets, which are randomly assigned by the Income Tax Department. The fourth character indicates the type of PAN holder, which can be an individual, company, or any other entity. The fifth character is the first letter of the surname of the person applying for the PAN. The remaining four characters are numeric, which are also randomly assigned.
One of the most significant advantages of having a PAN is that it enables the Income Tax Department to track all financial transactions of a person or entity, making it an effective tool to curb tax evasion. A PAN is mandatory for all financial transactions, including opening a bank account, buying or selling property, investing in the stock market, and applying for a credit card.
The process of obtaining a PAN is straightforward and can be done online through the Income Tax Department's website or in person by submitting the PAN application form at any of the designated TIN Facilitation Centers. The application fee for a PAN is currently Rs. 110, and the PAN card is usually issued within 15-20 working days of application.
In addition to serving as an identification key for tax purposes, a PAN also serves as a valid proof of identity and address. A PAN card is accepted as a valid form of identity proof when applying for a passport, driving license, or other government-issued documents. It is also accepted as a proof of address when opening a bank account, applying for a loan, or any other financial transaction.
