He contested the 1983 Assembly elections and led the TDP to a historic victory, becoming the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the first time. He implemented several welfare schemes, including the "Rythu Runa Mafi" scheme, which aimed to provide debt relief to farmers.


In 1984, he was removed from the Chief Minister's post in a controversial coup by his own party members. However, he returned to power in 1985 with the help of the people of Andhra Pradesh, who rallied behind him in large numbers. He continued to serve as the Chief Minister until 1989, implementing several reforms, including the introduction of the "Panchayat Raj" system.


N.T.Rama Rao returned to power for the third time in 1994, but his government was short-lived. He passed away on January 18, 1996, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions of people even today.
